The Project

Folk dance & traditional dress — making visible what connects us.

Folk Dance & Traditional Dress · The Map is an open directory of active groups. Free, transparent, from the community for the community.

What is Folk Dance & Traditional Dress · The Map?

An interactive map where folk dance and traditional costume groups from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and beyond can register their location, contact details and information about themselves.

Anyone looking for a group nearby — whether a curious newcomer, a recent arrival, or simply interested — can find at a glance who is active in their region.

The origin: Laboe on the Kiel Fjord

The idea for this project was born in Laboe — a small town on the Kiel Fjord in Schleswig-Holstein, where seafaring history and folk culture have been intertwined for centuries.

The Kiel Folk Dance Group, one of the oldest active groups in northern Germany, was the first entry. The desire to make this and similar groups more visible gave rise to the idea of a shared open map.

The project carries the maritime character of its birthplace — looking at the map should feel like unfolding an old nautical chart and discovering what lies beyond the next horizon.

How does it work?

1.

Register group

Register your group with location, contact details and optionally a photo. You choose how precisely your location appears on the map.

2.

Internal review

Every entry is reviewed before publication. This ensures all information is correct and all consents are in place.

3.

Visible on the map

Your group appears as a marker on the map. Interested people can visit your detail page, contact you — or join.

4.

Multilingual & open

The project is available in German and English. More languages and countries are planned — groups from around the world are welcome.

Privacy & Transparency

Personal data is only published with explicit consent. Each group decides which contact details are publicly visible and how precisely their location appears on the map.

For photos: all persons shown must have consented to publication. Entries can be reported at any time via the Report button.
